Accomplishments:

Even before incorporation in 1979, founding members of FOGB became alarmed at the precipitous drop in the number of humpback whales spending the summer in Glacier Bay.  From 1979 through 1983, FOGB independently analyzed existing whale-use data, sponsored gatherings of agencies, scientists and other organizations, and drafted principles and recommendations that became the foundation of the NPS whale monitoring and vessel management program.

1.   Friends of Glacier Bay conceived of the original 1983 Glacier Bay Science Symposium. Provided financial and logistical support to that symposium and the others that followed.

2.   Supported the closure of commercial crab fishery in the Bay proper.

3.   Responded, in thoughtful detail, to various NPS management plans and followed up with in-person visits to Superintendents and management staff. For example:

a.   Vessel-management plans

b.   Backcountry plans

c.    Front-country plans

4.   Provided financial support for:

a.   Creation of a Glacier Bay natural soundscape library.

b.   Film: The Singing Planet – a celebration of Glacier Bay’s natural            sounds.

c. Librarian services for Glacier Bay National Park Library

5.   Support the NPS mission to preserve and protect Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve at every opportunity.
